Hemophilia A (Factor VIII Deficiency), Hemophilia B (Factor
IX Deficiency), and Factor VII Deficiency (Proconvertin)
Hemophilia is a bleeding disorder caused by a deficiency in one of the
blood clotting factors. Poor clotting and prolonged bleeding are the
hallmarks of the disease. Hemophilia A, or “classic” hemophilia,
is a hereditary disorder due to the deficiency in clotting factor VIII.
Hemophilia B also known as “Christmas Disease” is
a hereditary disorder due to a deficiency of clotting factor IX. Factor
VII Deficiency is an extremely rare disorder that can be inherited
or acquired by individuals without hemophilia who take warfarin sodium
tablets.
von Willebrand Disease
An abnormality or inherited deficiency of the von Willebrand factor in
the blood, which affects platelet function and thus clotting efficiency.
The disease occurs in between 1-2% of the population.
Incidence of Hemophilia
Affecting approximately 20,000 people in the U.S., hemophilia is one
of the eight most costly disorders to treat. Hemophilia A or “classic
hemophilia” occurs in one out of 10,000 live male births, and accounts
for approximately 80% of all hemophilia cases. As such, Hemophilia A is
roughly 7 times more prevalent than Hemophilia B which has an incidence
in 1 out of 34,500 men. The disease occurs much less frequently in women.
Factor VII Deficiency occurs equally in men and women, and has
an incidence of one in 500,000 people.
